After dropping crowd-pleasing names like Luigi's Mansion 2 and Super Mario 3DS at its E3 conference on Tuesday, Nintendo quietly announced the upcoming North American launch of Fortune Street, a Monopoly-like board game for the Nintendo Wii featuring characters from the Super Mario Bros. universe and from Square Enix's Dragon Quest series.
Fortune Street is the latest entry in the long-running Itadaki Street series, which dates back to 1991 with Initial titles for the Famicom and Super Famicom. Later games featuring Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy characters followed for the PlayStation 2 and PSP, and Mario and his friends joined the cast with 2007's release of Itadaki Street DS. To date, no prior entry in the series has seen an English-language localization.
In an encouraging development, Fortune Street features a generous helping of Slime-related puns, as previously seen throughout Square Enix's wonderfully goofy Rocket Slime. A fun slime is guaranteed for all when Fortune Street blubs to the surface this winter. (I'm sorry)
